Celine's Story

<<Back

Celine is 9 years old. She has cerebral palsy which affects her legs. To help her walk she uses splints and a walking frame (and sometimes tripods).

When she was three years old she was given a picture book which had an image of a child using a walker. It was the first time she had seen a picture of a child using one and related to it immediately, even though it was in a humorous cartoon style. See the image bank and look for Two Left Feet.

Years later Celine could still recall that feeling of happiness she felt when she realised she wasn’t the only one.

To begin with the book was read by Celine and her two sisters. When Celine went to her playgroup the book went with her. And later on she took it to nursery and school too. It seemed to help the children and staff talk about disability.

Celine’s Mum felt that the book even encouraged those who were working with Celine to obtain toys and to introduce topics around disability. Four years on it is still a treasured possession.

"When she comes across books that include disabled children Celine punches the air and says 'Yeah! We’re in there!'" Celine's Mum said.
