Barnburgh Primary School - putting disabled children "in the picture"!

In October 2006 Barnburgh Primary School decided they would like to take part in In The Picture's Big Draw initiative. The whole school, from Nursery to Year 6 took part and sent their artwork into the project.

They used the Big Draw activities on the In The Picture website as a springboard to looking at disability equality with the children in a fun and enjoyable way.

Head Teacher, Rosie Baldock, said:

" The event certainly helped increase the children's awareness of disability and the lack of illustrated representations in the books they read. We will definitely do this again next year - it will become an integral part of our curriculum!"

The younger children created collages and older ones recreated a scene from their favorite book including a disabled character. You can see some of their work in our Children's Gallery.

In January 2008 the school held a writing week for all the pupils. They decided to make the focus of their stories and creative work images from the In The Picture image bank.

All the children from nursery to year 6 took part in the weeks events and this culminated in a "whole school story" where each year group contributed a section.

The school continue to work closely with In The Picture and promote the aims of the project to pupils, parents and colleagues within the borough.
