At the In The Picture Picture this! evening reception in London on 15 April 2008, Brenda Gardner from Piccadilly Press collected an In The Picture Champions Award from Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Cherie Booth QC on behalf of Moira Munro who was unfortunately unable to attend the event - you can read below how Moira has "championed" the project.

Moira Munro - putting disabled children "in the picture"!

Moira has been a key supporter of the In The Picture project since it started in 2005.

Moira with Hamish the Bear

Moira writes and illustrates the "Hamish the Bear" series of books [amongst others] about the world at the back of a teddy bear shop - one of the teddies, casually included in the story is a wheelchair user. These books [the first one published in 2003] have been recommended by Booktrust and Bookstart as inclusive stories.

Moira has taken the In The Picture 10 Principles into her world of writing and particularly illustration. She has consulted with the project on a number of occasions regarding both story lines and illustrations for publications. For instance she has casually included disabled children in two of A&C Black's series of musicals for schools performance packs. In one she included a sketch of a child using a walking frame rather than a wheelchair, because In The Picture had raised her awareness of a larger range of impairments that need to be included. In another [to be published next year] she worked with the publisher to turn the child's wheelchair into Cinderella's coach.

Moira has consulted the project on the inclusion of a child in a story with an eye patch which later became, due to age appropriateness, a strawberry mark. She has also trialled other ideas with the project where she has felt uncertain about the disability component.

Books written and illustrated by Moira are sold around the world and it is hard to measure the impact that her casual inclusion of disabled children [and teddies!] has had on disabled children who are able to find themselves represented in much loved stories. The impact on non disabled children must also be taken into account - children growing up with stories that casually include images of disability bring the subject into the mainstream.

Moira has added a helpful entry to the In The Picture Guestbook and freely promoted the project to both fellow illustrators and publishers, encouraging them to support the 10 Principles. We hope this will have a lasting effect on the world of children's books!
