What's The Story? This picture comes from a series illustrating the alphabet and drawn by Helen Shoesmith. This one shows two children playing with yo-yos. The girl on the right is wearing spectacles and one of the lenses is covered by an eye patch. About 2% of all children have an eye condition called amblyopia - often called "lazy eye" - which results in reduced vision to one or both eyes, the condition is often reversible with the correct treatment. Treatment involves complete visual deprivation of the stronger eye via an eye patch - these can either adhere directly to the skin or be worn over spectacle lenses as shown here. You can see some fun examples of eye patches for children here. |
