What's The Story? This image shows a group of children enjoying a lesson at school. The artist - Di Lorriman - describes below all her inclusive imagery. The girl [top left in a pink skirt and running] is deaf and has a hearing aid. The yellow table top equipment is called a loop system and enables the wearer of a hearing aid to hear at up to 4 metres. Alternatively teachers in the classroom can wear small portable loop equipment across their body – it looks much like a shoulder bag. The boy [in the red tee shirt with yellow stripes on the sleeves and sat at the table] has visual difficulties and is using a perspex slope to raise the work up so he can see it easily. The girl next to him in blue and orange stripes is left handed. Her writing hand position is bent over the top of her work so that she can see what she has written and also doesn't smudge it. Note that there is a space to her left leaving her plenty of arm room. The girl in the red tee shirt is dyslexic and is using a yellow acetate overlay which will make defining the letters easier. The boy in the wheelchair, wearing a yellow tee shirt with red zig zags, is using a touch screen programme in order to record a picture without pencils. Two children have difficulties with grip. The girl in an orange/purple patterned tee shirt is using a splint to firm her grip and the boy kneeling on a stool has been given large chunky pens that he can hold easily. They make a thick clear mark without the need for too much pressure from the child. The girl on the left, in a pink tee shirt with red spots, is using headphones and microphone to listen to instruction and record work on a tape. The boy in a blue tee shirt is dyspraxic and has difficulties with coordination. His paper is stuck down but maybe the teacher needs to rethink whether she gives him loose paints like this! The containers could be fixed in a tray!! The cat…well the cat is a show off and loving it! And teacher has definitely lost her grip! |
