What's The Story?

This illustration shows a young boy using a simple communication device. The device is attached to his forehead with a velcro strap. When it is switched on, an infrared light beams down from the device. In this scene the boy is just indicating his choice of colour. When there is little or no communication in the form of language or sign language, devices such as these can be used very successfully to communicate with others. When there is enough head control, the individual can "point" with the device and thereby communicate, illustrating choice.
This is a basic communication device, there are many more technically advanced devices, which depend on the ability of the child involved. For example you can see an illustration - in our image bank - of a child using a head pointing device to activate a computer here.
