What's The Story? This image shows pupils at a school playing a numbers game in their numeracy class. The boy at the front of the picture is in a wheelchair which he controls completely by using the joystick [which can be seen just below his paper]. This allows him a lot of independence as he is not dependent on other people to push him and he can go wherever he wants! The joystick controls of many standard wheelchairs do not require much effort to use and so are particularly useful for children with conditions that affect their muscle strength. Most powered wheelchairs also have optional controls for the chin, foot and head should a person not be able to use their hands. You can see some photographs of powered wheelchairs here. |
