What's The Story?

This illustration is reproduced from the story book "Seal Surfer", written and illustrated by Michael Foreman and published by Andersen Press. The story is of a boy and his grandfather who watch as a baby seal is born on the rocks near their home, and from that day a special friendship is created between the boy and the seal. The boy is disabled - this is not referred to in the storyline at all but can be seen via the illustrations. In some of the pictures the boy is in a wheelchair and in others he is not - this shows children through the illustrations that wheelchair users are not always sitting in them! This particular picture shows the boy lying on the rocks watching as the seal is born - notice how his crutches are laid casually alongside him on the rocks. Click here for examples of contemporary crutches - the brightly coloured ones would be particularly attractive to children!
