What's The Story?

The image below is from "It's raining! It's pouring! We're exploring!" a new book written by Polly Peters, illustrated by Jess Stockham and published by Child's Play International Ltd.
You can see a wheelchair propped up against the wall in the corner of the room. There is no direct reference to the wheelchair in the book it is merely a method of using illustration to demonstrate an accessible environment.

There are many ways to give environmental clues in illustrations such as ramps, adjustable sink heights, stairlifts and many more.

Another example of an environmental clue in a children's story book is the swimming pool scene in Harry's Hat - click here to read more.

You can see more examples in the Photo Reference section of the image bank.

Our information sheet 10 Ways to Start Including Disabled Children in Your Pictures also gives ideas about environmental clues. You can download it from the Resources section of the website.
