This poster was conceived and illustrated by Richard Johnson as part of an Association of Illustrators and In The Picture initiative.

You can read an interview with Richard about the processes of creating the image here.

The poster shows groups of disabled and non-disabled children in a fantasy story book. The children at the front of the image are literally putting themselves "in the picture"! You can see some parts of the illustration in more detail below.

Poster Detail

This part of the poster shows three children entering the fantasy land picture book. One boy is a wheelchair user and there is a ramp to make the book more accessible to him and other children with mobility impairments, the girl is wearing leg splints

This part of the image shows children picking apples - the girl on the ladder is wearing an arm splint and the two boys at the bottom of the ladder are using sign language [the boy next to the basket is signing "apple" and the boy standing is signing "thank you"].

This part of the poster shows two children reading - the boy is using Braille and the girl is wearing spectacles.

This section of the poster shows a group of children having a picnic. One of the girls sitting around the picnic mat is using a support cushion and her wheelchair is folded on the ground beside her. In the foreground a child is riding a tricycle and wearing a safety helmet.
